» APPEARANCE:

[ TAKE THAT! ]

Proper and refined are the first things that come to mind when people look at him. Preferring to wear suits (in wine red shades, no less!) Edgeworth is famously known as a 'frilly prosecutor' due to his preference for cravats instead of ties as his neck wear. A change from his first court appearances which involved rather intricately patterned blazers with his mentor, Manfred von Karma's influence, his present look is not only mature, but also graceful-- a sight that usually has many of his female fans swooning over his appearance (and is a source of amusement to many others). His dark steel-grey hair is worn neatly, his bangs remaining out of his face, and he's built well, toned and fit for a man in his mid-twenties. He's also quite tall, and maintains a proper and dignified posture when appearing before anyone, and smiles very rarely, aside from when he appears smug.

He has a rather intimidating glare, as well. That should usually serve as a warning for anyone attempting to get on his bad side!

» Orientation:
Asexual/Homosexual Leanings- Edgeworth is uninterested in any sort of "romantic" relationships in general from what we're shown in the series. Due to his career, he'd probably find such companionship a hindrance to his work, be it with males or females. He has been clearly shown to have no attraction toward ladies, however, (a fact that's made painfully obvious during the third case of Trials and Tribulations, when he contributes nothing to the questions asked of him regarding a rather attractive priestess in the game and who both his childhood friends have some feelings for) which is most likely because of the kind of attention he gets from women around him- attention which is more often than not, unwanted fangirling. This even causes him to question if he truly inspires such reaction from the 'frothing female masses' in one of the more hilarious conversations in-game, when Gumshoe assumes he might have broken some previous girlfriend's heart, which makes Edgeworth wonder how he came to that conclusion, causing Gumshoe to backtrack with the fact that he just assumed, judging by how many women fall for him. This is even more amusing when one considers that he has no girlfriend even in the later installments, even though both his childhood friends have at some point- or like Larry, who can't seem to get enough of having girlfriends.

His lack of interest in women also comes into play in Ace Attorney Investigations, when despite the fact that so many women are falling head over heels for him, his only reaction to it is in surprise and confusion, and complete ignorance to their attitude (and an off-hand mention of how he has no interest in the scents of female perfumes.)

There are moments however, where leanings seem to slightly show where it comes to his close friends- though this is quite likely just a strong sense of camaraderie. He's not willing to participate in any discussions involving a female's attractiveness when he's asked for his opinion, but he seems to have no trouble showing an incredibly strong sense of loyalty to Phoenix Wright, despite the way he behaves with him. Again, while this is done in a platonic manner, he values Wright's methods enough to use them to think his way out of tough spots in his investigations and occasionally brings him up while trying to solve cases, more than anyone else he's encountered. He has also been shown to drop everything to fly across the Atlantic when he hears he's near death, something Edgeworth is not shown doing for anyone else.

Bearing in mind that Wright and Edgeworth are not a couple in the game, the amount of caring shown by Edgeworth towards him is enough justification for him to break his own rules by posing as a defense attorney for him as he recovers from a cold (the real reason Wright was out of commission) as well as a later conversation with Wright's ex-girlfriend that states he has a 'dark secret' regarding himself when they have to discuss Wright's involvement with her, the only time this conversation shows up in the game. With Edgeworth shocked that she could see right through him and with her adding (in reference to her own care for Wright) that it 'takes one to know one', based on the conversation they were having before this when Edgeworth is pointing out who she was trying to avoid telling the truth about herself to, it's quite clear that both of them share some feelings for Wright, though it's left open-ended enough to suggest that it might also be in reference to the secrets they've kept from him. While this as well as some mentions in AA:I are the only few things to suggest that Edgeworth has more than just casual feelings for Wright (that is, being feelings of trust), it does put his involvement in Edgeworth's interest a lot more strongly than any interest he has towards any of the women in the series.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that he is homosexual, all things considered, but even with opportunities with women, his attitude shows a disinterest towards females in such a nature, treating them with no more preference than he does men. Most if not all his interactions with females that aren't criminals are either very brotherly, or fatherly, depending who he's with- the latter being notably seen with Kay Faraday, who makes a mention of it as well, and it is only Wright that elicits a different attitude from him where it comes to men.

With Edgeworth's general workaholic attitude, it's a given that he wouldn't place any preference in intimacy, and when we look at the kinds of women he has encountered, such as Wendy Oldbag and his own adoptive sister, Franziska, who he does express some wariness over for her tendency to whip people, among many- it would make sense as to why he does seem to be a lot more comfortable around men. However, he maintains a balanced attitude with all genders despite this, and there's enough evidence within the game itself that suggests that it's unlikely that he'd be looking for a partner canonly, male or female, at the time it's set in.

» Personality:
Edgeworth is a character who's faced a tremendous amount of growth over the span of years in the games- a private person and a perfectionist by nature, he has a completely no-nonsense attitude and is rather direct with his opinions when he feels that they must be expressed. That isn't to say that he's open with his thoughts in the same way, however. As we are shown during the course of the story, Edgeworth has many issues, mostly emotional, that play into his personality. These issues, while having their impact on his life, also become the reason he grows from what he used to be into what he is now.

Edgeworth used to be a frightening adversary to face in court-- his reputation as a "Demon Prosecutor" preceding him, he used to feel no remorse for criminals, determined to get a guilty verdict through whatever means possible-- and at one point in his life, this may have meant controlling the witnesses to make the cases go the way he believed they should. Due to an incident that became the turning point in his life to choose the path that he did under the tutelage of his father's rival and unbeknownst to him, his father's enemy, Edgeworth sculpted himself into what the world would perceive as the perfect prosecutor-- while meting out guilty verdicts to others as a sort of punishment to himself as well. His actions were extreme, mostly due to the kind of repression he had allowed himself to be put under because he believed he'd been responsible for his father's death when a gun accidentally went off as he threw it. Having not been given any reason to think otherwise, he harboured the guilt for fifteen years, which made him come off as arrogant and cold, and for the most part people would not be wrong in assuming so. Coupled with rumours of him forging evidence in later cases, he had every reason to be bitter, until his childhood friend Phoenix Wright proved him innocent through a series of events that unveiled the truth behind what had actually happened and lifted a burden off his heart.

After another case that makes him question the kind of identity he's become known for (to the point where a criminal in a later case suggests that Edgeworth and him are very alike and that in his position, Edgeworth would do the same), Edgeworth finds himself determined to set things right from what he used to be. He goes as far as to saying he 'chooses death' to kill off that personality, and disappearing for a year, returning later as a changed man, and as a prosecutor who seeks the truth. Through cooperation with his court rival and through building on the truth and the evidence they have, he's determined to chase the path of justice and to leave no stone unturned in making sure the whole truth is seen, so he doesn't make the same mistakes he did then. He doesn't falter when faced with roadblocks in his investigation, and has a sharp and intelligent mind that helps him 'logic' through the toughest scenarios, which is extrapolated on in one of the official manga stories, where he solves a case complete with logical explanations- without even looking at the crime scene. He has a very astute sense of observation, that helps him pick out details that might even be overlooked.

This also sheds some light on the fact that beneath that rather solid surface, Edgeworth is a person who takes a lot upon himself.  He keeps people at a distance, though his reasons have changed from allowing himself emotional support as a weakness, to him feeling like he's an imposing presence on them, and he's very critical of mistakes. He's got a sharp wit about him, using his talent with communication to confuse the defense, and has the tendency to be extremely harsh where it comes to pointing out mistakes, though at the same time, being patient with people who obviously have a harder time than him of understanding things.

However, he also exercises tact-- he's gentle in communicating with children and will not mind explaining things in a delicate manner to them, and is also very polite with women. His gentle nature beneath the surface shines through when he's giving advice (albeit in a usually very guarded manner) and he is further shown to have grown into an understanding and kinder person after the influence and changes brought upon in his life through Phoenix Wright, as well as the influence of companions that help him through his investigations. The only people he seems to have any sort of harshness for are his rivals and defendants in court, as well as those deserving of his suspicion. He can be rather straightforward, but he's understanding and will attempt to look at all sides of the story before coming to a conclusion. He's also very tolerant outwardly to being put down, repressing his words and trying to overcome any sort of weak arguments with logical comebacks, something that's seen in his interactions with Franziska and Investigator Shi-Long Lang, who are more than willing to talk down to him.

He does have his humourous and 'human' moments, though. Despite being a rather proper and well-balanced individual, he can become surprisingly awkward when he's cornered with something he doesn't know-- and he has his moments of vulnerability, which usually show when he's in social situations which require a bit more personal participation than he's comfortable with (and more often than not, people love jumping on the chance to take advantage of these situations, such as Larry and Maya encouraging him to smile and cheer, or Kay teasing him about his charm with women.) He also has a very elegant and refined taste in things- from the way he dresses to the high-class attitude he maintains, appearing rather snooty in his attitude because of it- however this only causes him to become even more humorous when he ends up embarrassed by anything, completely shedding the perfect image he has into a rather flustered- or scary person, not that this discourages anyone from trying to pick on him either way.

While he can be quite tricky with his rivals as well as the criminals he interrogates, it's possible to unnerve him by turning things around onto him instead-- which reveals another interesting aspect of his- his temper. And it's quite a strong one, too, which results in him refusing to listen to anyone, especially in his frustration. This is seen the most with Larry, who he openly expresses an agitation for regardless of the help and affection he gives him. He has his own shortcomings, things he usually attempts to gloss over when they come to light, to the point where it is only until the latest installment in the series that he's all right in expressing his adulation for anything concerning his favorite TV show, The Steel Samurai. He doesn't like expressing his fear of earthquakes and of dark spaces, since he despises appearing 'weak' in any shape or form

His dedication to his cause is passionate and sincere, and he is determined to find the truth no matter how difficult it may be to reach. He's also a workaholic, spurred on by his motivation to seek the truth and make sure he does his best regardless of his circumstances. After the three years he spends trying to re-discover his motivations, he grows to become someone deserving of respect, and the loyalty his friends- and even those skeptical of his career, show to him, is proof enough of that positive change. For all his shortcomings, he is a person whose friends and environment have helped his personality grow, and with his determination to make sure that he gains justice for those who have been wronged, he's more than willing to take the right steps into becoming someone he, and the people he trusts, can be rightfully proud to be around.
